Hi all,

I was selected as JL in English in 2004. I am herewith putting some of my thoughts regarding how to prepare for Junior Lecturers Recruitment in English.

1. First, read "Outline history of English Literature" by W.H.Hudson. You will get the overall picture of English Litt by reading it.

2. For Romantic and Victorian Periods, read "English Literature" by William J Long. Read it thoroughly and make extensive notes.

3. For detailed syllabus, take guides written by Dr.Raghukul Tilak. If not possible, try to take Ramji Lal. Take individual guides. For example, we have four dramas of shakespeare. You have to take four guides. Like that, you need to take nearly 18 guides for the entire syllabus.

4. Read "A Glossary of Literary Terms" by M.H.Abrams. Try to read very important terms first. For example, literary genres, periods of literature, figures of speech, meter, stanza forms etc.

5. Read " Background to English Literature" by Prasad (McMillan Publication) for Shakespearean comedy, Shakespearean tragedy, Shakespearean historical plays, Shakespearean Romances etc.

6. Go through the syllabus and old question papers. Then, write the questions from each drama, novel, poem separately.

7. When you are reading guide of a drama, read paraphrase thoroughly. When you are reading make notes of:

a. Characters. Write character names and its significance in the play.
b. Places: Write why the place name has been mentioned.
c. Imp.Lines: Write the lines and write which character to which character, in which act and in
which scene.
d.Act wise and scene wise summary: Write a SINGLE line summary of every scene in every
act.
e. Biographical inf.: Write biogrophical information and write all the works written by the same author and imp.characters in those works too.
f. Criticism: You will get criticism of the work in questions and answers given in the guide. Just go through those criticism lines and make notes if you feel it's important.

NEVER FORGET MAKING NOTES IS UTMOST IMPORTANT TO SUCCEED.

8. Try to read the literature with imagination but not in the way of examination. First enjoy it and read it for pleasure. In the second reading, you can read for exam.

9. For General knowledge paper, I have taken R.C.Reddy's General Studies materials. I have read atleast thrice.

10. First of all, have self-confidence, and belief in God. Try your best and the whole universe can conspires for your success.

All the best from me.

If you have any more doubts, feel free to write here. If I know, I will try to answer.

Regards,

Ramakrishna.
